EVs ask three things of their tyres that petrol cars don’t: carry more weight, survive instant torque, and do it quietly without costing range. Here’s how that changes what to buy.
Weight
A battery adds hundreds of kilograms. That raises the load each tyre carries, so check the load index carefully and look for XL or HL (high load) construction where the placard calls for it.
Torque
Full torque from standstill means more wheelspin and scrub, especially on dual-motor cars. EVs often wear tyres noticeably faster than a similar petrol car; rotate them every 10,000 km.
Noise and range
With no engine noise, tyre roar is the loudest thing in the cabin. EV tyres add foam liners and low-rolling-resistance compounds, which also help range.

EV tyre questions
Do electric cars need special tyres?
Not by law, but they benefit from them. EV-specific tyres are built for the extra weight and instant torque, use low-rolling-resistance compounds for range, and often have foam inside to cut cabin noise. Any tyre you fit must still meet the load index and speed rating on the car's placard.
Why do EVs wear tyres faster?
Batteries make EVs heavier than similar petrol cars, and electric motors deliver full torque instantly, so the tyres carry more load and see more wheelspin and scrub. A smooth right foot, correct pressures and regular rotation make the biggest difference.
What does HL mean on a tyre?
HL stands for High Load. It is a newer service description for tyres that carry more than an XL (extra load) tyre of the same size, aimed at heavy EVs and SUVs. If your placard or original tyres specify HL, replace them with HL tyres.
Can I put normal tyres on a Tesla?
Yes, as long as they meet the placard size, load index and speed rating. Many owners choose EV-optimised versions for lower noise and better range, or tyres marked T0 or T1, which were developed with Tesla for specific models.
